3. Christ Is Not A Code
In the last section we saw how Kuhn’s Theosophy took us very far along the spiritual path but stopped short of the Christ, and how Steiner was the final culmination or corrective to the view that Christ is merely another symbol of the realized soul. A high symbol indeed, even the highest, Kuhn might say. But still a symbol, an allegory.
When I encountered Steiner’s Christology, I was deeply moved. I feel like its the missing piece I was hunting for all along. Christ is not merely another solar hero like Osiris, Jonah, Maui. A real cosmic event happened in Palestine that was the historical counterpart and culmination of what all these solar myths prefigured and prophesized.
As I said before, the ancients in pre-Christian times had a certain clairvoyance to the spiritual worlds and so their adepts and visionaries saw or at least faintly glimpsed at the approach of Christ. My own religion growing up, Judaism, could even be embraced more fully; Steiner says that Christ was already active in the Hebrew stream, speaking through the burning bush and preparing the people of Israel for the incarnation. Christ had a part among all peoples and cultures before his actual incarnation into Jesus of Nazareth. Steiner not only gave me a conception of Christ that resonated but also helped me accept my own Jewish inheritance as something preparatory and necessary along the road of revelations I was now undergoing.
On the deepest ontological level, Christ was part of the cosmic plan from the beginning of earth evolution. However, the manner in which he would come was dependent upon the nature of The Fall of Man as a result of the effects of Lucifer and Ahriman and the resultant sickness of sin. Before the Mystery of Golgotha, this sickness had become too widespread for a return back to spirit. The earth and humanity would have sunk deeper and deeper into density if Christ had not found his way into a human body at that point in history. By living, suffering, dying, and conquering death, a new impulse was implanted in the earth and in all the souls of mankind. Now the impetus back to spirit is assured, but the work must still be done as a free deed within each human soul over a succession of lifetimes.
If the reader has descended into the rabbit warrens of part two, they may recognize that here we see the true form of the perverse and detached cosmology I received from Z: the “Spiritual Hostage Myth.” It somewhat describes part one of the cosmic drama but then turns the Christ event into another Luciferic fantasy – only a small remnant knows what’s going on and can save humanity.
When I was decoding media with the TS 1.0 lens, I was seeing lots of Christ imagery. Crosses, secret lineages, magical gifts, a chosen one, discovering hidden superior abilities, saving humanity through special destiny. I now see them as more Luciferic. They awaken just that astral body spinning I was pointing to earlier, how decoding felt fun, frantic, ungrounded, and a special mission I was being shown by mysterious forces. I needed that to feel alive at the time. This matches very well with how Steiner describes Lucifer’s influence within the human organism; because remember, the effects of adversarial spiritual forces are real, but personal, karmic, individual, not a parasitic race from another timeline or dimension trying to take over host bodies. It’s far less glamorous and far more personal than that. It is something we face every day in our thoughts, in the tendency towards grandiosity, or the unconscious yet ubiquitous desire for external validation.
Real Christ symbols are deep and mysterious, but they don’t stimulate the astral body in the same grandiose way. They don’t ask for deep manic dives into pattern seeking. They often point to concrete moral feeling life. White linen and sandals in a dry desert. The washing of the feet. The baptism. Breaking of bread and sharing it with the multitude. Wounds, death, rebirth, transcendance. The I-presence stays grounded, even if the symbols provide an endless wealth of exploration for the astral body.
Lucifer’s symbols say, “you are secretly more powerful and important than you know.”
Christ’s symbols say, “become willing to descend, serve, suffer consciously, forgive, and give yourself.”
Only one points the way to the many mansions of Father’s kingdom.
Only one awakens the feeling and the will in the right way.
I began this memoir with a mention that it was at root a wounded inner child and a young adult traumatized by mass unspeakable violence in the news that led me down the rabbit warrens. I end by saying that it is through meditating on the Christ symbols and by seeing his acts as real deeds that have had the deepest healing effects on the same wounded child within. I share all this in the hopes that it can help others out there who may have gone through a similar journey.
